Default Exh. pipe pop

For the 1st 15-20 min's. when I drive my 31 when I let off the gas to shift gears I hear one pop in the exh. pipe each time I shift, I did notice that I have a slight leak at the clamp that holds the pipe to the manifold, it seems to get better the longer I drive it.
Could this be caused by the slight leak at the clamp, or is their another problem, [to rich/to lean] I feel sure the timing and points are right and hav adj. the mix. by the book. ...Any advice? Thanks.

I think you are on the right track with the exhaust manifold clamp. Had a similar issue, and a bit of muffler cement between he manifold and the exhaust pipe, reclamp and wait for about 10 minutes should take care of the leak.. Also take a peek at the motor to manifold gaskets for leaks as well..

Thank's Dave,
Does the muffler cement get so hard that it can never be removed ?
Did you use any special cement, [auto-zone or from an "A" model vender ?]

Also check the rear clamp! Muffler needs to move some for expansion!

You have to make sure the pipe lines up true to the manifold not on any angle. then you apply the muffler cement. It can be purchased at any auto parts store. The pop comes from the flange area sucking in fresh air and causing an explosion of the unburnt gas in your muffler.

muffler cement is not really a glue, but more like a good strong putty that stays in place when dry.. You can tap it off pretty easy.. My first attempt at the stuff looked like a first grader building an ashtray out of clay.. Luckily after it dried, I used a wire handbrush around the joint to remove the 'arts and crafts' quality of my first attempt
