Default Check out my first Model A! 1929 AA Truck

Hello everyone, I have been lurking around here for awhile now and I finally got my first model a last week. I dont really have too much to type about my self as an intro except I'm 18 and I've been waiting to get my own model A for years but everything has been out of my price range or just too far gone.

Alright enough about me and my nonsense, onto the truck. I caught wind of a model A truck for sale while I was at a tractor show in New York 2 weeks ago and after awhile I tracked down the owner. I got talking to the guy and I have to admit I had my doubts since his asking price was fairly low compared to everything else I had seen. Thankfully he only lived a few miles away so we took a ride over to his place to check it out. After we got there he lead us down to where the truck was outside his barn, he said he bought it from someone locally who was going to junk it. Anyway he takes away the tarp and I see this.

Well I was overjoyed! I crawled around it for a little bit and we struck a deal. The next weekend we left home and 4 hours later it was on the trailer headed for home.

Upon getting it home I really looked over it and it almost appears that nothing has been done to this to alter or change it. It was built on January 18, 1929 and it was last registered in New York in 1951. The only major thing I noticed is that the starter must have gone some time before the truck was parked because it was started with a crank for years. Also who ever owned this must have had some trouble with the headlight switch because the switch at the bottom of the collum is gone and the lights are wired to a switch on the dash. I was amazed to find there was even remnants of the interior panels inside the cab.

And here is one last pic as it sits now, I put the headlight lenses back in for this pic.

Its still on the trailer and my dad and I are trying to get it started this weekend, I plan on posting some updates as I tinker with this thing and I also hope to learn more about them as I go. I'm not real sure if this kind of post fits in around here but I am real excited and I figured maybe some of you guys would get a kick out of it too.

Thanks,
Mike

Wow - fluted headlamp lenses - those are early...

Congratulations ! I have always liked the '29 AA, with those concave disc-wheels !

My "Dream truck" is a '29 AA open express ( like the one on "The Waltons").

Looks like you've got some work ahead of you... let us know how you are making out with it !

( PS: I'll bet you're feeling a little weak in the knees with excitement ! )

Saw this thing on your Instagram. Very cool find indeed! I'd like to bump into something that complete so I can turn it into a gow job with minor modifications.

Yeah my Instagram updates are always more up to date than anything on here or the hamb cause its so easy to use! haha. I'm still on the fence on what to do with it, especially cause I have a '36 banjo and a 29 pickup bed that are looking for a home!

They are still out there you just gotta talk to the old timers!

For sure! This thing is too cool, especially because it is mostly untouched! The back of the cab is real rough tho, and the ford script bed is all but shot but I'm definitely going to save that before anything.

By the way... where in Northeast Pa are you at if you dont mind me asking?

Looks like a great start, thanks for posting. I must also commend you on your proper grammar and spelling, something that I rarely see anymore in posts from young people.

Thank you. It always takes me a really long time to type responses and posts because I proof read all of them over and over to make sure they make sense.

I didn't really look that one up. I was told by a few people that it was worth what I paid for the truck. I figured it was off a Hupmobile. I know nothing about those cars but I thought it was spelled with one P not two. Anyone have any ideas?

It is a Hupmobile tail light about 1930 I think. I have a 1928 Huppmobile and the light is different

J Franklin, what is the difference between a Hupmobile with one P and Huppmobile with two P's? Was one a aftermarket Mfg. with a knock off similar name?

I misspelled hupmobile, that is what the car was named, the company that made them was the Hupp Motor Company.

You're doing just what I'd do.......getting the motor started first. Hearing a running engine will help to keep you motivated!

You better look at The Waltons Express again. It is a closed cab.

Very cool! Keep us posted on your progress. There's nothing quite like an AA.

I didn't drop the pan yet but it does have oil in it which isn't very bad looking. That old oil should be fine to get a few pops out of it. It wont be running for very long we're just trying to hear it start. Its more of a challenge than anything else!

I would not try to start it. So many times the rings are stuck,or there is rust in the cylinders, after setting for years. Any attempt to get it running could cost you more money,if you need to sleeve a gouged cylinder.

The thing that strikes me is the front fenders are pretty damn nice. Usually those AA's had a hard life and the fenders are welded up junk.

If you are this excited about your Model AA Ford truck...It will PAY you to first join the Ford Model AA Truck Club if you have not already.

Also the website for the club is www.fmaatc.org

Neil puts out an excelent yearly magizine about the AA's and many of your questions can be answered by getting all of the past publications.

Plus, join a local Model A club in your area...that to will be a HUGE benifit to you in your restoration process.

And yes...this is also the place to post such things as to what you have.
