Default seat belts

My 1931 Model A Deluxe Roadster was delivered yesterday. Can anyone provide information on installing seat belts and where they, and necessary hardware) can be purchased? Thanks.

Thanks, I just checked. They only go back to 1936. Nothing even close to a Ford Model A.

No one sells Model-A-specific seat belts. You just buy generic belts. Seatbeltplanet is good because they have a wide selection and you can choose a belt color that matches the car.

Mikes Affordable - Mike's "A" Ford-able has seatbelts. Haven't tried to use them, however.

The seatbelts are easy to find ,you will have to figure out how to mount them. No one makes a kit that I know of.

On my roadster I fastened the them to the seat riser with supports to a crossmember that I made.

There should be some step by stelp threads if you search here.

Seat belts in a Model A have to be engineered for each body style. Attached document shows how we did for a 31 Victoria. We also installed belts in both back and front on a 1930 Tudor. However, the file is too large to attach here. If someone wants it send ne a PM.

Les Andrews covers seat belt installation in his Vol. II, the green book. It has specific instructions for coupes, Tudors and Fordors. I used these instructions as a guide to install them in my roadster. Juliani’s is a good source for seatbelts and mounting hardware, too.

X2 on Juliannis. They have good back up washers and hardware too.

Mikes, or Mac's. I think I always buy the ones that are extra long. One thing though, be sure to attach them to the coach, and not the frame. If those little 1/4" case hardened bolts holding the coach to the chassis together break, the only thing holding the coach on will be you. Think of it as a medival stretching machine...

I ordered seat belts and hardware kits for my Model A. It comes with heavy bolts. I can't figure out how I can tighten the nuts and bolts myself. Is it a dumb idea to just drill some holes and use heavy sheet metal screws? After all, I'll never be going very far (only local roads) and certainly not fast. The guy I bought it from owned the car for many years and never put belts in.

Do you mean that you can't figure out how you would wrench on the head of the bolt and the nut at the same time, because one is inside the cabin and the other is under the car?

exactly. Since it's a roadster, I thought about putting them through the panel behind the seat back but that presents the same problem and would look bad when the rumble seat is opened.

N'evening Kenjt,

this is how I screwed it on my 28' roadster.

Behind the sheet runs a 1/4 " thick and 2 1/2 " wide flat iron over the whole length right to left.

I did the same as Werner. Hold the bolt head with vise grips clamped horizontally while you are under the car working on the nut, lock washer and such. They will hit something and will not rotate 360.

I only have 1 in my car. Back seat, and it was for my son, and his car seat when he was young. It's a personal choice. If I have them then some cop might have the expectation that they be worn, if ya know what I mean... My 1957 Ford Skyliner is the same way. My streetrod does have them though.

Didn't think of that, great idea, thanks

To make it easier, would it makes sense to bolt the seat belts to the metal panel separating the back of the seat and the front of the rumble seat area? That way I'd avoid having to get under the car. The belts I bought came with individual brackets.

Kenjt: I think getting under the car will be easier than being doubled over trying to work in the rumble area. But, suit yourself. Maybe a steel piece horizontally across the foot area of the rumble would give better resistance than just the sheet metal.
