Default Yard art 28 coupe

Just watched some well meaning folk get a 28 coupe running which had been moribund for many years . Sadly they did it no favours and if you have a strong stomach you can watch it on "You Tube "

John in no change in the weather Suffolk County England .

I watched until the first commercial and gave up. I had a feeling that the young man did not pull the pan or valve chamber cover to clean out. Is that right?

I have a commercial blocker on my computer so I never saw any commercials. I watched it to the end, at twice speed. He did not take the pan off nor the valve chamber cover. I do not believe he was interested is saving the engine, just getting it running.

It is a tribute to the Model A engineering that the engine started and ran enough for him to move it out into the yard.

I watched it and agree with nkaminar - he certainly approached it more as a "I wonder if it will start" rather than "I wonder if I can get it reliably running for the long term". That said, I have to admit that in my youth I did the same thing with several barn-find cars - the challenge was to get them running, and as long as they had oil that was good enough to see if the engine was worth diving into in more detail. Still, good on him that he got it going. I never would have thought to try to get an old engine started on 2-cycle premix! Just shows how forgiving those engines are.

I noticed he had no clue about retarding the spark at start.

But, but, he did CHECK the oil before starting! No oil change. No attempt to fill the dipper tray, nor to get oil to the mains. No mention of checking or changing gear oil either. Although, he did add some humor when he pumped the brake pedal several times and announced that it had brakes. All-in-all, a cringeworthy video!

I'm not sure how I feel about that but I do know that guy is an idiot. Even though he finally got it right that +ve was ground, he still called it "hot". It looked like a decent set of 16" wheels on it. They are pretty scarce here.
I don't think he cares one iota about the car.

I think this guy did a fine job getting it started knowing nothing about Model A's. I would not have put another dime into it before seeing the engine run and he only ran it for a short time. He accomplished what he wanted to know, now is the time to make a decision as to what to do. Make the engine saleable, restore the car, drive it to the scrape yard etc. - he can do whatever he wants after he purchased. It's his and he accomplished his goal of getting "yard art" started. I say good job.

Many years ago I acquired a small junk yard of mid to late 1930 cars, 9 in total. One by one I got them running and sold them at swap meets. I would strap gas cans on the side to supply fuel to the carburetors. No oil change, no new parts, just the bare minimum to get them running. Buyers would walk up and the first words were "does it run?" I would start it up for them. I would start at some price and reduce the price by $50 or $100 each half hour. Each one sold.

Give the kid some credit. Most people would have sent the car to the scrap yard.

I wonder what will finally happen to it?

Enjoy.

Had the same attitude as a teenager. I chased down a guy towing a 35 Chev pickup to the scrapyard and gave him the $16.50 he would have got at the scrapyard and he dropped it in my yard. The gas tank was in the cab as it had fallen off so I drilled the back of the cab and attached the tank with perforated strapping. Started right up and I traded it for a 29 Model A Tudor in similar condition but more useful. Used the motor out of the A in the 31 roadster I still have today. The roadster motor went in the Tudor and a guy bought it to covert to a tractor. Good deal all around!

I laughed at that too! Clearly, no freakin' clue, but he got it running. That's how ya learn.
