I replaced the ugly dash panel in my 29 Tudor. Looks great and everything worked for a few days. Now the speedometer has stopped working. Seems that when reconnected the cable, it may not have threded on as far as it was originally. I took it apart again to look at it. The little pin or gear shaft falls out of the cable. Is it supposed to be fixed?? To me it seems that maybe it isn't going all the way in to the cable side when I thread on the nut and isn't seating all the way in. Also, it just doesn't seem to thread on as far as it should. Lot of threads there but I can only thread on about 2 revs. Any ideas?? I really don't want to replace the whole cable unless necessary.

I don't understand what you mean by the pin or gear shaft up at the speedometer end?

Sorry about that, I probably wasn't clear. There is a approx. 1.5" piece with hex end for speedo and a round end that goes in cable. Is this little piece suppose to be permanently fixed to the cable? perhaps mine is broken off??

sounds like inner cable broke time to replace the cable

Yes it is fixed and should go into the female end of speedometer housing,and then screw the cap on all the way. need new cable .

"Maybe" the speedo is seizing??? & snapped the cable end off???

Yep, to be sure of a free turning speedometer you can take the broken part of the shaft, stick it into the speedometer and try to turn it with your fingers. If it doesn't turn freely then you need to have the speedometer lubed or repaired.

My replacement cable did not bottom into the speedometer. I used a thread file on those threads, and now it does bottom into the speedometer head, like the original did.
