Default Speedo works backwards

speedo show forward speed only in reverse, and bottoms out in forward gears. i just now got the speedo cable installed for the 1st time since ive owned the car. its a 42 fordor with a 47 rear end. the turtle will only mount in one direction and allow me to install the cable. if i install it reversed to how it is now I have to cut a hole in the frame.

will reversing the way the turtle mounts make the speedo work correctly?

I think you must have the torque tube clocked wrong to force such a mounting of the turtle. Easy check, the center zerk fitting should be straight down at 6 o'clock.

Is the turtle mounted so that the cable attaches to it on the bottom?

Who had the torque tube out? I am wondering if the driven gear - at the end of the driveshaft, was installed backward.
Would that make the speedo run backward? Maybe someone else can answer that with 100% certainty. I think it would but am not entirely certain.

If the torque tube was installed wrong then the radius rods wouldn't mount to torque tube as they should. The mounting point for the radius rods is also on the bottom???

Shouldn't make any difference, the teeth would still be at the same angle.

I swapped rear ends because the original rear end had bad gears and it was cheaper to swap than rebuild. The rear swap was a complete assembly swap, nothing was changed on the "new rear" prior to installation.

Torque tube has the e-brake cable mount welded on, on the bottom of the tube.

Now, for my statement I have to drill a hole in the frame -- well it darn sure looked like i would. After flipping the turtle and reinstalling, the cable passes between the frame and a floor support.

I took the turtle off and checked rotation of the cable drive based on mount and sure enuf, rotation changes if you flip it, so I did, speedo works now.

It's refreshing when someone reports back on their 'fix'....

I guess I'm just goofy. This is the first major undertaking I have done and every time I have success with something I feel like a kid and have to share it with someone.

The picture are how it sits today. but still way far from being "done" if it is ever done.

I think that you and I are made from the same stock.

That is exactly why I have my '42's.

I also have a Fordor Ex-army staff car to do one day if I don't run out of time that is
