39 Ford front coil springs
I need to replace the two coil springs on the front end of my 39 Ford pickup (commercial). Have not been able to locate them anyone sell them?
What else will work to replace them? Thanks, |

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
Never seen any coil springs on any Early Ford. Could it be someone added those ?

Coil springs? You're having a hard time finding them because originally the truck would have used a leaf spring.

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
That would answer my question, I cut these off this morning they were bolted to the frame right behind the cross member for front motor mounts.
Since it originally did not come with them one would think the front leaf spring was weak, or does the 8ba engine it came with weight more than original? |

Is the axle stock? How about a photo of it so we can see what you have.

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
So someone added coil springs and kept the leaf spring? If possible enlarge your photos and repost them as they are a bit small close analysis. Thanks.

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
Yes, the coil springs were added and looked like they belonged. Was this an old stabilizing trick some used?

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
I'm guessing this was a "farmer fix" and may have been used as a trailer. The leaf spring has been beefed up with extra leaves too. You need to take into consideration that those parts have probably been severely overloaded so should be checked carefully before road use.
I'm basing my trailer WAG on the modified drag link, plus the fact that I have never seen helper springs on a road going vehicle. I'm thinking they would foul the steering if it weren't locked in the straight ahead position. |

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
After market springs that used to be called 'helper springs' for when the owner was over exuberant and wanted to carry a load that the vehicle was not designed for.

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
The truck came of the North Georgia Mountains, and I would speculate by all the mud still under the truck it was a hard working truck. The way they were mounted they would not interfere with steering. The rear spring had no additional support added.

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
I wonder if the truck (ok, it wasn't a trailer) had some additional front mounted equipment, a winch or some other heavy item. Odd that the front should be beefed up, but not the rear.
What's going on with the drag link? It looks modified. |

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
The helper springs came in different weights / colors represent the weights . I remember red blue and yellow . The blue were the 2000 lb helpers . They would only come in contact when overloaded . At least the way I set them up . Never used them on the front . I have a set on a hot rod 34 ford frame with a 30 Chevy 3 window on it . Gas tank and battery are on same side .

Re: 39 Ford front coil springs
The difference in weight between the 8BA and earlier models wouldn't be enough to warrant helper springs. In fact, the 8BA is probably slightly lighter than the earlier models.
