Where do I add grease to the steering box?
I have a 1934 Fordor that I got last year. Just got some John Deere Cornhead Grease for my steering box based on recent threads on the barn. Where do I add the grease to the steering box - through the bolt on the top shown in my photo?

Just screw that cap off, and pump it full. It helps if you jack up front end. You can have someone turn the wheel back and forth. You may have to add more grease after a few trips.

Yes, remove the threaded plug on the top of the steering box.

Why not use the heavy gear oil like a 600 or 500 weight like original??? Is this grease better than oil?? I know it's good stuff. I guess it won't leak as much as oil.

Corn head grease is a bit thick but if you heat some up in a small tin (old soup can ) it will flow much easier and then you can pour it in the hole in the top of steering box. It flows right down into the corners at the bottom of the box when its liquid. Regards, Kevin.

Lawson, I recently filled my steering box with JDCHG and didn't drain the old stuff out first. I've put a few miles on it and so far no leaks!

Re: Where do I add grease to the steering box?
Same here. I just pumped in as much JD grease as I could with the grease gun, right on top of whatever old oil had not leaked out yet. I finished it off with a wooden popsicle stick. Ideally I should have found a thread adaptor to attach a grease fitting so I could do it all with the grease gun but I didn't have any fittings the right size. The old Merc steers great and does not leak any more.

I have drilled and tapped those plugs for grease zircs in the past, makes servicing it easy.

Re: Where do I add grease to the steering box?
I too used a grease gun to install the JDCHG grease in my 34 truck but I did not pressure feed it into the box for fear that I may not know when to stop and thus force grease down alongside the end plate tube and into the light switch.
