Front brake and frame webbing questions
Hi Guys,
Two questions regarding my current Model A restoration work. 1. The Front Brake Assembly. Where does the felt washer on the 7 1/4" long Operating Pin go? The Front Brake breakdown diagram I have looks like it fits (sandwiched) above the Operating Wedge and bottom part of the backing plate. I thought that to be where it fits in the assembly, but somewhere along the line I either heard or read something about it being located/installed within the top part of King Pin. Which is correct? 2. The frame webbing. How far is it installed to the front of the frame and how far on the frame does it go back towards the rear spring? Thanks in advance to all that provide to me this help. California Charlie |

Re: Front brake and frame webbing questions
The felt gets tucked into the narrow space at the bottom of the kingpin, so it is between the kingpin and backing plate ledge.

Re: Front brake and frame webbing questions
Thanks Tom,
One other brake question regarding my restoration effort. The 15degree positioning of the brake lever adjustment. Is that adjustment the full travel of the brake lever forward to a stopping position, or like I have what appears to be looking like 15degrees before the lever reaches the full travel of the lever forward? I already have 2 cup shims installed on the brake wedge to get the operating pin to this point of my adjustment. I'm just concerned that I may have some kind of component wear which allows my actuating level to travel more forward than the 15degrees, or if this is commonly found when making this adjustment. The instruction manuals don't tell about this situation. It's hard for me to tell if the 15 degrees is at the full travel of the lever or slightly before it. |

Re: Front brake and frame webbing questions
Charlie,
From the way the front wheels and brakes are set up, your maximum leaverage is from the 10 O'clock to 2 O'clock position, or visa versa. So therefore, you want to start your pull from 10 or 2 O'clock. There is no sence in starting the arch at say 4 O'clock, because the brake rods can not pull vertical. Starting from 2 to 10 will give max movement and leaverage. The 10 and 2 O'clock positions equates to the brake leavers leaning roughly 15 degrees forward. Regards Chris |
