Ford Activities in 1941
The last cars to roll off the assembly line before all resources turned to the War effort. See Henry Ford get in B24 Bomber being built at Willow Run plant.

Re: Ford Activities in 1941
Does anyone know what the white car is with the tall side windows? I think its about half way thru and its shown from the left side. The sound doesn't work for me.
Thanks. ......Mark

Re: Ford Activities in 1941
The first several minutes seems to be a group of Red Cross Motor Corps girls checking out a new '41 Woodie with Edsel. Very unusual to find video footage of the Motor Corps, but Ford was very supportive of their activites.
I'm curious about the white car half way through as well. English Ford?? That's a very early B-24. Willow Run didn't produce a whole bomber until October 42, so I wonder if that is a pattern aircraft, or the first one to fly into the Willow Run Airfield? Henry is still pretty flexible ducking into and out of that bomb bay.

Correct. That is a very very early B-24; among the first built. The airplane in the film is a B-24A with short nose and no intakes on the cowlings. This aircraft was not a pattern aircraft for the B-24E type Ford first produced in 1942-43. |

I have seen it some where before but can't put my finger on it. May have been a possible example of changes to be made to the Ford production car that didn't happen due to the war? Torchie. Addendum.... Found it. Fords all soybean concept car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean_Car |

Re: Ford Activities in 1941
Yep! Only the trunk lid on Henry's all steel car was made out of soybeans for demonstration purposes.

Re: Ford Activities in 1941
Henry Ford was very big on the use of soy beans as well as Hemp.
In fact all during the war the Government encouraged farmers to cultivate Hemp as it was used in many war related materials. It's kind of ironic that as a boy/young man Henry couldn't wait to get off the farm. And by the end of his life one of the true "Industrialists" of the 20th century was advocating a return to a more agriculture based way of life. Torchie. |

Re: Ford Activities in 1941
The guy getting the gold watch is Ford's soybean Chemist who developed the plastic used in the car. The driver of the car was the designer/builder, the only one willing to drive it due to the smell of soybean resin inside the car!
