Enamel paint when it is cool out?

What happens if you paint the frame with enamel paint when it is only 40-45 degrees out?

Nothing as long as it is catalyzed and allowed to slowly cure. Forcing the paint to cure too quickly generally creates a brittle paint.

Chuck painted Minerva's fenders, splash panels, etc, with synthetic enamel & some kind of hardner. After sitting in the sun for only 2 days, he was able to cut & polish them, amazing & beautiful job. He also cut & polished the body that had black lacquer from '96. God! the car looked like a total quality repaint!! Bill W.

now i am mixed up who is vermin and who is minerva. are they 2 separate cars?

Your probably OK with enamel if you have the right amount of hardener in it. Just let it dry and gas out naturally. I would give it a couple of weeks before cutting and buffing.

I prefer painting in a controlled environment due to humidity and seldom lay color down when it is that cold. Paints expensive...I suspect you know that.

Howdy, Parker! Buster T. here, you think you mixed up? Ol' Bill still orders parts for Minerva, the Fast Black Early'30 Std. Coupe he sold 'cause he was broke, instead of gettin' parts for Vermin, the Black & Blue, (Sounds like the bruise on Bill's arm) Early '29 Coupe. (Not a "special" just a plain old coupe, but Ol' Bill likes him!) Check with the paint rep that sold you the paint. Probably best if you can find a heated garage to spray in. A lot of paints stop curring bellow 65 degrees. I wouldn't paint in 45 degrees, because your metal will be cold and could cause more problems than it's worth by rushing the process. We're only a few weeks away from summer time.

I have shot acrylic enamel at 0F before. I don't recommend it but you can get away with it if you are patient and know what you are doing with the paint.

Paint people always told me that catalyzed paints won't cure properly below 60-65 degrees.

That's what I was told and I would never shoot paint under 65*. That really limits the days in Minnesota if you don't have a heated garage.

55 Deg.s is about as low as you would like to go. Below that it will take a long time between coats for the paint to flash off. It can be done but it's a toss of the dice.
I remember painting in 32 deg.s and it took hours for the paint to flash and boy did it run!!
