Default 1940 Ford Oil Sender

Ford offered two senders on was 50# and another was 80#.
Not sure which is correct for the original '40 gauge which is 80# max.
I am looking for an original or OEM substitute with correct resistance.
Any help appreciated.
Don

The 50# sender is correct for 1940. So far as I know, they're not being reproduced, but they occasionally appear on eBay. They will have a "50" stamped on them, or no marking at all. Those stamped "80" are for the later 80# oil pumps.

In 1940 there was no marking. The marking (80 or 50) began with the war effort. There was then a need to quickly identify them. Before that, there was only one unit and as such, no need to identify.
You are okay, as 4dFord/SC has correctly advised to use either a unit with no mark or one with "50".

You can safely use an 80# sender on a car with a 50# gauge maximum, like your '40. The calibration of the indicator will be off. The max mark (50#) indication would be actual oil pressure of 80#. The center mark would mean actual oil pressure of 40# instead of the indicated 25#, etc.

I have tested quite a few of the Ford Oil pressure senders, the 1935 - 1942 Ford V8 models run a low 50 lb gauge which runs a early model oil sender unit with no markings and they were then marked with a 50 stamped on them later on until 1942. The 80 lb oil pressure sender was used after 1942 on Ford vehicles with the 80 lbs pressure gauge, therefor are marked 80 onwards. You can easy see what the correct sender for gauge is because the gauge is marked with a 50 or 80 in various ways.
I found that there are not many accurate oil pressure senders around, and they are not being reproduced. I would say a N.O.S would be hard to find and worth a lot.

No resistance involved (at least not as commonly referenced with modern senders) they work on a current pulse setup from a set of point in the sender.

If you go to kaiser Willys Jeep arts and look for an oil pressure switch, they sell a 50 lb switch that should work. Mike

Someone some time ago mentioned something about those Kaiser Willys Jeep parts oil pressure
switches on this forum before, that would only work on the early 50 lb gauges , good idea at least you would know it is new unit.

You can mix any KS sender/gauges and they work just fine...putting an 50/80 or a fuel sender to your oil gauge doesn´t matter.
The gauge just knows 0-full.
The sender sets the range...using a 50 sender full reading on the scale will be 50...using a 80 sender full reading will be 80.
Jeep uses the same type KS gauges...you can just switch the faceplates between years and brands as long as it´s a KS gauge.
Watch out for the modern Jeep stuff...same problem there as it is here...offshore resistive senders are around.
