Default Model A Steering Wheel Restoration

The original steering wheel that I have is in excellent condition with the exception of many small cracks. I have searched on the forum and am aware of the exopy that Eastwood and others sell to fill the cracks/repair steering wheels.

My question is -according to the JS the steering wheel shall not be painted. After filling the cracks with the exopy how would I get the color to match the original sterring wheel material. Do you add some type of coloring to the exopy?

Is there a pro out there that does this for $ and does not paint the wheel?

Thanks - Hunter

Try taking an old steering wheel and grind up some of it's pieces into powder. Mix with epoxy and fill the cracks with the paste

Additional Question - When the steering wheel was placed on the splined shaft (29 car) was the steering wheel spokes in any particular orientation with the front wheels facing straight ahead?

For example was one of the spokes at 12 oclock position or was it just random.

10 oclock and 2 oclock so you don't obscure the speedometer from the drivers view.

Here are pictures of my steering wheel. Do you think it can be improved upon without painting or should I leave well enough alone?

I am striving for a fine point car.

Thank you - Hunter

Well here is your answer in a nutshell or maybe a walnut size.. Fine point judging is designed that a car be restored to the degree that it came off the assembly line. Now with that said...do you think it is okay?? Ask yourself that question. I think that answer is obvious.. HOWEVER, the next question which myself and others will tell you is "to what degree do YOU want your restoration to be" With that said, i will ask if you want to hunt of a new wheel, they can be found, do you want to spend around 2-300+ if so great, I'm with you all the way, if not fine also, you should know that you will get some deductions for this wheel in it's condition BUT on the overall scheme of total points you wont get destroyed. Remember its YOUR car to do as you feel comfortable. I dont know how much that answered your question but i hope it gives you some thought about which direction to go into.

BRENT Chime in here please,
Let us know if you have anymore questions, we are here to help

Mark,

Thank you for the honest answer. The question I have is how to fill the cracks so that the repair will not be discernible. I am not sure how to get the color match without painting the wheel.

Any info would be greatly appreciated on the proper technique. It would seem that even mixing ground up particles of a junk wheel with the epoxy would yield a slightly different color. What am I missing?

Hunter great, that is Osk Kosh. The restoration product is sold by Brattons for steering wheels, it is a primer, epoxy and you supply the paint, he used it and got full points in dallas with the restoration of a a cracked original steering wheel.
Good luck

I used A Shell commercial epoxy, and colored it black with Xerox machine block powder. I cured several applications when the crack was deep, 'til the crack was fully flush of epoxy. You will have to look hard to see the cracks after sanding the surface smooth.
