rebuilt generator

bought a rebuilt generator off the net and it squeals. the seller says it is a 2 bearing unit and they are noisier than a one bearing one bushing unit. is this true or do i have defective bearing(s)?

Doesn't make any difference, shouldn't squeal. Sounds like at least one bearing has a problem.

No pun intended but it sounds like a bad resource. Send it back and get a refund.

A while ago i bought a used rebuilt generator from a "reputable" electrical shop that does alternators and generators. Not for the Model A.

It didn't sound right so I took it apart. Other than a nice paint job and new brushes that is all they did to the unit.

I agree with CT, but I doubt they will pay for shipping. Try changing out the bearings yourself.

Had same experience off EBay. Bought one off eBay as a spare. A couple of years later needed it and it only worked for 200 miles before started squealing and bearing noises. So bought another one off eBay as "working when taken off car". Took them both apart, both were trash, not even repairable. Broke wire lead insulation falling off, one had a bearing that had froze up and had worn a groove in the armature shaft, brushes bad, etc. One squealed which was the brushes. Very oily inside, both a real mess. Learned my lesson and paid for one from Berts. Will not buy a major component off EBay again.

This was the noise I also had.

some times the front bearing seizes to the shaft and spins in the front housing,never had a good generator make a unusual noise.call and return it.

I just changed my mind. Run it and see if the noise goes away

I just went through the generator on my "A" too. Before I replaced the front bearing in it I tried running an alternator. More bad squealing, what! I had it checked (eBay purchased) when I first got it and it checked out Okay. Could it be the water pump which was an unknown property when I purchased the car? Long story, short: the fan belt was the problem. I did a search here on the ..'Barn and found various problem solvers. Candle wax is what did the trick. Very carefully while the car was running I rubbed a short piece of candle against both side of the belt. No more squealing.

PS: I had changed to another fan belt when I tried the alternator. Which had caused the squeal. Once the old genny with a new bearing was installed while still using the new fan belt. The squealing continued and I
searched and found the solution to the noise.

Have you tried oiling the bearings?

That's the sound I have on my 28. What should I do to correct that?

I'm wondering if maybe that is caused by wrong brushes or possibly wrong springs on the brushes?

Many years ago when I would rework a genny it would then go on my test bench and run at full output amperage load for 30 minutes.

If I did that today people would scream and complain the thing was 'used' because the pulley would show some belt wear, the mounting holes would show it had been clamped by bolts, and the commutator would show a pattern of complete brush contact.

Does anybody actually test run rebuilds beyond a 10 second spin with a cordless drill and a socket anymore?
