Default water pump

the water pump on my spare engine leaks, so i ordered a kit to rebuild it. but it looks different from my Les Andrews book. can i use the housing and just put in the new pieces from the kit, or do i have to get a different housing.

You've got an old aftermarket water pump . You will at least need an original type water pump housing . Its not likely that you will be able to use any of the parts that are in the kit . The pump that you have uses the early V8 seal that doesn't use packing or a packing nut .

You could use the housing - but you'll have to bore out the rear of the casting to take the "old fashioned" brass rear bearing/gland.

Possible, but possibly a challenge to get the rear bearing in the correct spot front/back. You may create issues with the length of the pump shaft/positioning of the impeller on the shaft.

Admittedly this can be a problem even with Ford castings/pump rebuilds. But so can quality of parts or even methodology of re-build (there are several options/upgrades you can do.)

New pumps in the original style are available and get past most of the issue. Not a lot of money, certainly less than most modern car water pumps complete.

Or go the "Ultimate" pump which is basically a bolt-in and use it.

Or buy the proper casting and build your own - and save this V8 derivative pump for a wall hanger, like my display of four Model A pump variants.

Or - don't they still buy and use V8 pump cores over at HAMB? If you can rebuild a V8 pump, you can certainly rebuild this one.

See https://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_m...passenger.html It will take some ingeniousness to adapt this kit to a longer shaft Model A type application.

I think I paid like $4 for my V8 Derivative Model A pump over at Amherst, NH not so long ago - and it came with an original (cracked) fan - which I threw away. So you're not out that much if you bypass your pump.

I should go buy a lottery ticket. Went to a local flea market & a guy was there and had one, it looks like an original.
Thanks for the help
