Default Whine?

I'm new to the A and only drove one once (mine) for about 2 miles before I started tearing it apart, My question.. is it normal to whine in 1st and 2nd gear?

Yes. Model A has square cut gears and square cut gears whine to a certain extent. Mine are worn and really whine.

Thanks Peter, haven't checked the fluid level yet but thinking of flushing it out with fuel oil and replacing with 600 wt., hasn't run for 28 years.

I don'tnotice mine unless I let off of the gas in 1st gear before I shift. Then it is quite loud. I don't notice any noise in 2nd or 3rd. I wish I had rebuilt the transmission when I rebuilt my motor this year.

Yes, straight cut gears can whine a little.

Believe it or not, some manufacturers back in the day proclaimed that whine as the "Sound of Power."

Yup. 1st and 2nd do tend to whine and 3rd is quiet as a mouse. You get used to the noise in 1st and 2nd and don't even notice it after a while.

Join a local Model A club and ride in a few cars. A little whine is normal with straight cut gears.

Once you install the floor boards and a floor mat, things will be a lot quieter.

This is my first posting at The Ford Barn but I couldn't resist... I just got the '30 coupe that my folks courted in some 65 years ago running for my sister who now owns it. When I headed down the street with it the first time, it screamed like crazy in 2nd. It was awful! I considered pulling the trani out and replacing it for her. I took my mom (85) for a ride in it and as soon as I hit second, she lit up and said, "Yes, that is what your dad's car sounded like! I could hear him coming two blocks away!" They lived in Dunsmuir California when they were young. If you have ever been to Dunsmuir, you know it is a small town clinging to the sides of some pretty steep canyon walls leading down to the Sacramento River. Then, it made sense to me. Dad rarely got out of 2nd gear because there was no place in town flat enough to pull in 3rd and 2nd offered a bit of braking too! Mom doesn't want me to change the transmission and my sister may never drive it so it will stay the way it is...for now.
