Holly 4000 (Teapot/Tower of power)
Ok guys, lemme have it.
I’ve got a great running Merc flatty in a 49 ford. Headers, heads, Chibby electronic ignition AND an Edmonds intake with a Rochester 4g. Electric choke and 1’’ spacer. Runs and drives lake a watch, smooth as a baby’s hindquarters . The old adage is kicking in (if it’s running good you should screw with it), right??? |

If you're car runs that good, leave it alone. The Rochester 4G is a good carb. I'm a little partial to the Holley teapots, since I've done so many and for so long. That's the carb that was on my first car.

The teapot ain´t a bad carb but compared to a 4G it needs more attention to work good.
So i can only chime in with the rest...if your 4G runs great find another tinkering project instead of the carb swap. |

If she works really well then put a lever on it and lever alone. The towering inferno carbs are good carbs but can be damaged easily during a rebuild process. You can have all sorts of trouble with one if a heavy handed mechanic ever got a hold of it and warped or damaged the castings.

Thankx for all the input guys. I had one on my 56 T-Bird but as I remember (1964) it functioned reasonable well. Had some float level issues but that was about it..

Rotorwrench has given you great advice.
I have more experience with those 4000's than I ever wanted. But, as RW mentioned, most all problems are caused by someone "rebuilding" it. |

While I would not recommend you replace a good running carb with a different carb, the teapot is a good carb. I still have one on my 56 Bird that was rebuilt by a guy in PA and he did an excellent job. It runs great.

Leave the carburetor alone and put a rumpity cam in it.

Since you mentioned 'Tower of Power", suggest you get their original album/CD and play it while driving. And turn up the volume. Great band.

Sal, what kind of stock carb does my '52 Custom manual transmission have? It's acting up, rebuild kit or Stromberg (sp) replacement?

Jeff,
'52 and '53 Mercury's with the 255 flathead V8 used a Holley model 1901 2 barrel carb. A two barrel version of the teapot. It has a four bolt mounting flange, so a three bolt Stromberg (97) won't fit, unless your talking about a WW Stromberg, which is a four bolt carb. thankx Sal. I've got to go thru the 4GC anyway so I've been considering changing over to the Holly. Now that I've got my Heliarc up and running I've been thinking of fabricating an polished aluminium air cleaner with a see-tru lid.
Do you have any experience with this supplier? They show a kit for my 4000 Holly http://www.walkerproducts.com/ |

Gene, I usually get my Holley 4000 kits from O'Reileys Auto Parts (Walker kit # 15136), or from "Carbjunky's" on EBAY with free shipping. Amazon also has the 15136 Walker kits. If you need a secondary diaphragm, Carbjunky's has them for $30. They have the best price on the kits. If your carb is from 1955 model year, you will have to go to the hardware store and get 4 slightly smaller O-rings for the secondary brass fuel tubes. They went to a bigger size in '56 (which is what comes in the kit).
Some late '56 carbs (Holley list number followed by -2) use a slip in fuel valve seat (not threaded). Seals with an o-ring. If that's the case, I would try to re-use it with a fresh o-ring, or you would have to buy a very expensive kit with that type valve from someone like Mike's Carburetor Parts. Sal |
