Re: ? California Vehicle code for pre 1936 pickups?
I have a '33 pickup and still had to have it weighed for title in California when I bought it from Illinois. That's the only time I ever weighed it back in 2004. Now I just get license renewed like every other car every year.

regular car plates but the DMV told me that since it was a pickup being registered first time in Cali. I had to weigh it for the title.

They told me I had to get my AA weighted when I went to get a CA title and I told the
lady it was exempt, I got the deer in the headlight look. Went home and came back with the exemption printout and didn't have to get it weighted. Bob |

I have checked this little tidbit to be true: In California, you CAN be cited for hauling materials in a pickup that has car plates. Because I occasionally do a run to Lowe's or haul a chair in my 31, I stayed with the commercial plates.

Re: ? California Vehicle code for pre 1936 pickups?
Put a 'cab' over the bed and that will exempt you from the weights. I had a 97 ranger with a cab on the back and got car plates for it. If there is a cab they assume you are not going to use it for commercial purposes. Maybe you can come up with something to use in the stake holes?

Re: ? California Vehicle code for pre 1936 pickups?
My Cummins-powered '92 Dodge pickup weighs over 6,000 lbs, and the yearly registration fees were over $242 when I bought it, back in 1999. A couple of years later I had my DMV lady certify it as a passenger car, and to avoid any issues related to the license plates, it carries vintage vanity plates. Now my annual registration fees are less than half of that, for a savings of over $1,000 every 8-1/2 years or so.

Ca. CHP Vin verify can reissue you a form to expidite the uninforced code. Only dmv counter goons are trained to funnel you into paying something they know nothing about, beurocrats.
