Painting stainless steel tailight housing
I believe mid 29 CCPU's had brass teacup taillights that were painted black. I have a very nice 30/31 stainless teacup taillight which is the same size. Since pickup and AA trucks originally had the teacup taillight painted gloss black, I would like to paint the SS taillight (outside only) gloss black. Since the SS is very smooth, I was thinking of beadblasting the taillight and then painting it. Does anyone see a problem with the paint bonding on the SS once beadblasted? Is there a better way to make sure the paint adheres to the taillight housing.
Thanks for any help with this. Rusty Nelson |

Re: Painting stainless steel tailight housing
That's how I would do it. Rough it up nicely and then use a good coat of a good epoxy and you should be good.

Would self-etching primer work?

bead blast the light, and prime with a bare metal primer and paint.

Re: Painting stainless steel tailight housing
Thanks to all that responded. It sounds like epoxy primer followed by Concept black is in order after beadblasting the taillight housing. After sandblasting or beadblasting on regular sheetmetal items, I spray them with epoxy primer. I now use the epoxy primer that Southern Polyurethanes in GA makes. The primer is less expensive than PPG DPx0 epoxy primer and sands much, much better, if sanding is necessary. I will spray the teacup once the weather is better here in MN with epoxy primer then the black top coat.

Re: Painting stainless steel tailight housing
I have nothing to add to the "rough it up and paint with epoxy" other than an anecdote. At some time in its life, our late-30 pickup was "upgraded" with a passenger radiator shell. We couldn't find a painted one (seems they're kinda rare) so we ended up painting the stainless one - worked out fine.

Good move. SPI epoxy is ten times better than garbage DP90 and cheaper if you can believe that. Have fun.
