Re: Model A flywheel repair
"A "casing" is the outer part (often also protective) of a piece of equipment and may have a lot of removable panels to allow servicing and repairs. A "housing" is often more difficult to open because it is intended to protect the equipment inside."

The Gulbankian boyz are definitely an asset to the antique automotive hobby, and are known for quality work too. They are participants here too. With the above said, I too repair cracks with the same method as they do. I also have repaired several flywheel housings using the lock & stitch method. The question(s) that I have is, how well are these crack repairs holding up over time with today's style of driving. I don't know on my repairs as I have not had the opportunity to go back in to look at the repairs to determine this. I would like to hear feedback from them if they have gone back after maybe 10,000+ miles of use to see if any of the cracks redeveloped. This housing gets a lot of flexing from just normal driving. Typically this flexing is caused by shock loading and twisting as the frame moves, and as the rear wheels are constantly loading & unloading. Most cracks in engine blocks, cylinder heads, and housings are never subjected to the same type of forces. Any other comments or thoughts are welcomed. |

Re: Model A flywheel repair
I have a cracked one and was considering tossing it in the scrap pile. I guess I'll hang onto it.

Re: Model A flywheel repair
I've seen them cracked..has anyone seen a catastrophic failure? Where it required repair prior to operation?Ford revised the housing a few times during production to strengthen them..

Re: Model A flywheel repair
I met a guy at the Portland Swap Meet some years ago who told me that he was always on the lookout for flywheel housings that were of Canadian origin. He claimed that the Canada-made housings were a better casting and that he had never seen one with cracks. I wonder if there is anything to that.

Maybe there was less angled parking in Canada.
