32 Ford emergency brake lever
Dales manufacturing makes a new emergency brake lever (they say). Has anybody used one. It is in the Bob Drake book but naturally it is not in stock. They cannot even tell me when it will be in stock. They said call back after Christmas.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
If you are refering to the emergency brake handle, it is the same as Model A and most all vendors sell them. The only difference is the rathchet pawl which is unique to 32 and easily intrechanged and rarely worn out/

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
Found one on Mac's site as well as a few others. They are listed as 32 to 34 pickup truck. Is that same as 32 passenger car.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
The handle is the same as are the moving parts within the handle. To clarify Michael's note, the pawl at the end of the operating rod is the same, but the part that the pawl engages that is attached to transmission shift lever housing on a '32 is unique and different from that used on '33-'34s which is attached to the center cross member.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
Some old Ford parts stores list the 32 passenger and 32 through 34 pickup as the same part. Macs does not but has the part listed for 32 to 34 pickup.. I had them give me the measurement between the mounting bolt holes and it is the same as my original 32. 3 3/8

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
QMDV,
At my business we stock the mac's handles. The handle is the same 1929-34. The pawl that mounts to the transmission on the mac's handle is for 1930-31 Model A. You can use every piece of there handle with the exception of the pawl that mounts to the transmission. |

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
The pawl (as I call it) on the left is 32, and the one on the right is 30-31 (like what comes on the Mac's handle). The hole seperation is the same between the two, but the mounting height and hole orientation is different as you can see.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
To avoid confusion, how about using Ford's parts catalogue terminology, which appears to be dictionary correct, which is 'pawl' for B-2786, the part attached to the operating rod and 'sector' for B-2795, the part attached to the transmission shift lever housing such as that shown in Michael's photos?

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
As DavidG states, a pawl is the movable part that locks into notches or teeth to prevent movement (locking paw) or to limit movement to one direction only (ratchet pawl). The sector is the part with the teeth that the pawl would lock into.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
I found another example of a 1932 Ford specific “Sector” or pawl assembly. Bottom is a 1932 without the catch pressed out of the center.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
If you have the correct sector part, you can look for an original Model A handbrake assembly and have the handle and button replated, (butler finish of course). The repo's just don't look right next to a real one. My 32 handle was in bad shape but lots of model A stuff out there.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
With respect, only the lower two-thirds had a Butler finish on a '32-'34 handle. The upper one-third had a bright chrome finish along with the button.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
Just found this post and I am about to put the emergency brake handle on my 32 sedan project. I have 2 handles and purely by luck they are both correct for 32. So thanks for showing the pics, it allowed me to identify the correct segment.
I now need to make an adaptor to fit the handle to the 39 type gearbox cover. Bring out the reclaimed angle iron! As I needed to remember the shape while I went to the garage, I remembered that 32s have the ears "high". In other words the handle is lowered compared to a model A. Something that might be worth remembering when browsing the swap meets. (remember those?) Mart. |

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
Dave, Yes I had my revived old Model A handle done correctly as I have the book. That is the only way I would have known how to do it. Grip and button bright, shaft dull. This is my point that if you use a real one and have it plated you can do it correctly. The repro's don't look correct and even if you had them stripped and replated they would still be wrong to the eyes of the knowing. Lots of model A handles out there that can be repaired and replated into a correct assembly. (you still need the correct sector). Do it once , do it right and move on. Besides any real '32 fan can not complain about getting to use a model A part available at model A prices.

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
I think given the cost of polishing the handle Ford likely sand blasted the lower shaft to remove the stamping die marks then just polish the grip part , or plate the whole thing with a dull finish then polished the upper , but then again I am sure David would know more about this ,

Re: 32 Ford emergency brake lever
The first layer of plating on the handles was dull nickel, the next step was to polish that dull nickel on the handle portion of the whole followed by chrome plating. When chrome is plated over dull nickel the finish remains dull and only the polished portion has a bright, shiny finish. The dull nickel followed by chrome plating process was used for the shift lever, cowl vent lever, and accelerator pedal without the polishing step. The result is known as a Butler finish. Today, very few plating sources offer dull nickel and as a result the desired dull finish on the chrome has to be created after the plating is completed using an abrasive such as a course grade of ScotchBrite, a non-metallic scrub pad or the appropriate grade of wheel on a grinder.
The biggest challenge in this regard is recreating the dull finish on '33-'37 grilles where originally only the raised perimeter and leading edges of the grille bars had a bright finish (except for '33 grilles where only the raised perimeter had a bright finish originally). |
