If you are not going to reuse the four blade fan because it is cracked( replace it with a new aluminum two blade) you can bend one blade back to remove it without removing the radiator, just tilting it forward.

Actually the fan is not cracked, but I had already purchased a 2 blade aluminum after reading on here the dangers of some of these old fans. I will give your suggestion a try. Thank you for the reply.

Ray, I was able to get the fan off using your suggestion. Thank you.

Since the water pump doesn't leak, and after removal, looks to be original,(or original style) I'd like to keep it. If I use the thrust collar and washer to eliminate the end play, is there another washer I need to purchase for my new 2 blade aluminum fan? People has said to add a thin steel washer. Do the suppliers offer these, and where does it go?

Thanks so much everyone!

I don't know if the vendor's sell them. The washer goes behind the nut that holds the fan on. I just posted this on the fan replacement thread.

My new aluminum 2 blade fan didn't come with the thin steel washer everyone says to use. I went to a hardware store, and couldn't find an exact fit. I found one, I think metric, that fit in the circular depression on the end of the fan. But the hole was a tad small. I rolled up sandpaper into a tube, and turned the washer around the sandpaper to enlarge the hole. Took about an hour, but it worked.

I purchased the the thrust collar to eliminate the end play yesterday. I got to thinking last night, I'm pretty sure the shaft has the woodruff key permanently attached to it. Has anyone seen this before? If the key is permanently attached to the shaft, can I get the thrust collar and washer on the shaft from the front?

You should be able to pry the key off the shaft by using a flat tip screwdriver and a few light taps from a hammer. Never heard of one being permanently attached.

Thanks Tom and tbird, that was all it needed. I feel a little sheepish for having asked the question...

Next thing, all my parts should be here today. Do you guys use permatex, (or something like it) on the water pump and timing cover gaskets? Thanks

Using permatex is subjective, I just use a dab on the oil pan corners... I do not use it on the water pump gasket or timing cover to block surface, it can also be unsightly. If you removed the water pump studs from the head put sealer on the r/s upper stud as it goes into coolant, if not don't worry about it..
All opinions will vary..

Does the washer go in between the fan and thrust collar, or between the pump and the thrust collar?

Bratton's catalog says the washer, collar then fan.
