Default need to change position of tie rod on steering

I need to reverse position of tie rod on my spindle from top to bottom on a steering conversion job. The Ford spindle I am using will accept a tie rod from the top and I need to reverse it so that I can attach the tie rod the opposite way in order to clear the wishbone. in other words the taper is the wrong way.

How can this be accomplished ? what are my options. The steering spindle and king pins can be easily moved.

A close measurement now is .533" on bottom and top is .596
I need to reverse this
Will a ball joint reamer do the job ?

Use a tapered reamer half way from the other side is the way to go. Speedway sells a reamer if you can't find someone that has one.

^ As above, a half and half taper has been proven to work on these early Fords. You could drill through first (from the half way through the taper diameter) to give the reamer an easier time of it, but this probably isn't necessary.

I used the Speedway 7* reamer and it worked fine. Need to go easy and not go too far. Also works for steering wheel tapers.

thanks to all who responded, I will order a 7 deg. tapered reamer from Speedway on Monday. How long should it take to do the reaming if spindle is left on car vs removing spindle and setting up in drill press ? should I remove it ?

I used a 1/2" drill slow speed and did not press down very hard. do a little at a time and check it with rod end. You want it to go in just far enough to get nut on with cotter pin.

You can do it in car if you can get to it.

Just jack-up, remove the wheel, and support the car high enough to get the drill and reamer under the eye. Use a little cutting oil on the reamer.

The most important thing is that you get it as straight as possible. It is important that the centre of the hole is at right angles to the face the nut seats on.
