Once you have the correct battery ground, turn the lights on to see if the ammeter reads correctly. If it doesn't, then you need to switch the wires on the rear of the meter.

Attached is a pic of the shorting bar I mentioned for changing the alternator output from Pos to Neg Ground (or vise versa).
