Universal joint mateing to gear box
As most know our model a is a fire truck, we are having a problem because the Universal joint mates up to a gear box then out of gear box to the rear. My problem is that the transmission end hooks up to the transmission as normal a model a would . The other end hooks up to a gear box and there is a slip sleeve looking thing . It has a round about 2 in piece of pipe that has internal splines in it That mates to a gear that has external splines in it. Im wondering if this sound like a piece that they may have use on a wrecker or something and not just our fire pump. It has 3 different fabric seals that need replaced and the splines are getting a little play. I didn't get pictures because they sent it to a shop to see if they would know Thanks Billy

Re: Universal joint mateing to gear box
Sounds like you have an auxiliary "dual high" 2 speed reduction transmission. The internal/external gear setup you describe is normal for that unit.

Re: Universal joint mateing to gear box
There should either be a coupling shaft or an auxiliary transmission behind
your main box. Bob |

Re: Universal joint mateing to gear box
It sounds like the same coupling shaft that was on the 1930 AA I restored for a guy. The coupling shaft was really worn out, including the outer cover, and the parts were fairly hard to find. Between Bert's, Little Dearborn, and swap meets, I was able to find all the parts to assemble a new coupling shaft from NOS and mint used parts.

Here is a pic of the coupler that is used when the HI LO unit isn't used, does it look like this?, is the rear axle still the truck?, the coupler you refer to can't be removed with it still in place.

Re: Universal joint mateing to gear box
I believe there were 2 different lengths of these coupler shafts. The one I will hopefully be retreiving is from an early 30. I did not measure it when looking at the parts. So it may or may not be the one you need. Rod

Re: Universal joint mateing to gear box
I'm not sure about the length, but know that 2 styles were mentioned when I was looking for the late 30 AA parts. As Pluck mentioned, Neil Wilson is the AA man.
