Default Strange Transmission Modification

I've been in the process of moving and going through my old car stuff. I had this spare transmission and was looking it over to see if it was worth a hoot and noticed the strange large gear welded on to the input shaft. A corresponding small gear is welded to the cluster gear. Any idea why?

When you shift gears what is the action of the output shaft?

I know it's hard to see, but notice the center of the cluster has been machined off.

Maybe an in-n-out box for racing or forward reverse for a boat.
I don't see a cluster gear at least not a whole one.

It appears that the only functions are straight through like normal third gear, and reverse engaged and not engaged. And reverse is either 1 to 1 or very close.

The boat idea makes some sense.

it looks like it was made to run at a high speed in reverse and direct drive forward. they have machined off low and second gears off the cluster gears. I will go with a boat.

Strange, but using it to operate a boat or winch does seem to make sense. Still, for a boat or winch, I'd have used a stock tranny.

Unfortunately, I can't see much of a reason to keep this in my "collection". Can't see much of any use for anything...

There are some good parts to be saved. Don't throw it away, but pass it to someone that would use or save the good parts.
