Worm drive rear end
I have had a few people look at this rear and they are not familiar with this end cap,It appears to be a different style than what they are use to seeing it is on a worm drive rear. It is on a early 28 As you can see its been hot and I want to know what we have before we attempt to pull it apart thank you.

Re: Worm drive rear end
That cap usually has a bearing. Yours is shaped differently, and it looks like it may have a bushing instead. If the drive shaft still turns, you should have no trouble removing it to see what is in there.

Re: Worm drive rear end
Here are pictures of what I found when I removed the cap off the end of the rear. The shaft is also scored . I think I need a complete rebuild . The bearings have no visible numbers. ! of the races appears to have Timken jl69310 but im not positive. If anyone has any of the parts for sale let me know ,I will even buy a complete rear, Want to to brakes also Im almost positive it is the high speed rear as I put in 3rd gear with 1 tire of the ground and it took 2 1/2 revolution of the hand crank to 1 tire revolution as I was instructed to do I can get more pictures if needed Thanks Billy

Re: Worm drive rear end
like croscut said on the other forum i think someone tried to make do as ive never seen a tapered bearing in the rearend of a worm drive, should have a big wide ball bearing back there as it can handle thrust in both directions (forward and reverse gear)
pic of said bearing pic of said bearing and rear half of worm can kinda see it in the lower right going back together you can see how everything is supposed to sit one more because i can

Re: Worm drive rear end
Do you know where I can find a complete rear, does the high speed and low speed rear take the same parts, housing. bearings, races etc., I know the gears them self are different. If not do you have the part numbers for the bearings. I know I need we at least all the parts in the back side of the worm gear including end cap we are willing to pay for these items as we use this fire truck for our members funerals so I can have it out of service to long never know when we may need it,

Re: Worm drive rear end
A low speed rear end housing will accept the high speed gears with no troubles. My truck has a rear end housing that is stamped with an A for low speed but had the gears swapped out with high speed gears before I got it.
The very early 28 AA trucks only came with a high speed gear set in them. Later the low speed gears were offered as an option and the rear ends were stamped with either an A or B.
