Default Steering box color

From factory -- were they raw, black, or maybe black with plain metal covers (the look I'm partial to)? Surely this has been discussed but can't turn up any info.

Not certain what year you are referring to. In 1939 and 1940, the entire assembly was painted black.

It's a 41. It was probably all black that year as well but just for fun I decided to leave the cover raw and clear coat it.

Also looking forward to having a proper horn instead of button under the dash.
