Default Another Model 'A' Crash.

A 8 second blurb on the news...Wisconsin Rt 29 near Shawano West of Green Bay is a divided four lane road with posted 55 mph and 65 mph sections. The road usually is just as straight and flat as could be for 30 or more miles at a time heading out into the country.

A couple in their 80's last Sunday were driving their Ford Model 'A' and entered Rt 29 from County Q [I think] and was 'Tee Boned' by a 52 year old woman driving her SUV.
Occupants of the Model 'A' and SUV drivers were injured. Conditions unknown.

No further information. I would assume the 'A' was badly damaged. skip.

I have corrected my incorrect info I had thought I heard. Thank you again. skip.

To update this--> The 80 year old man died of Injuries.

Thanks, Skip.

Apparently a couple in their eighties with a non-seat belt equipped Model A Ford crossed the highway in front of the Avalanche and are in critical condition.
Our prayers are for them and for their families.

Lets see if this link works without the newspaper's ad blocking the article?

Have learned that the wife has now died from the above mentioned crash. Several members in our club knew the victims. This couple was on a Model 'A' ramble put on by a club other than ours.

Our club had a ramble a while back where the leader had arranged for two squad cars to block a blind curve at the top-o-hill and bottom-o-hill so 28 'A's could make a left turn onto Lake Michigan Drive. A smart move indeed.

Can't say if the women who drove into the 'A' was on the phone, 1930artdeco

A terrible shame! A good reminder that when driving our Model "A"s we need to be ultra careful.

I hate to say this because the outcome was a terrible tragedy for the family but given the circumstances that the Model A was entering or crossing the highway makes it moot whether a cell was involved if there was no light or stop sign on Rte 29 for the intersection. Assuming the driver of the modern car was not required to stop, the entering A was the burdened vehicle. I've been riding motorcycles for years and have seen many friends injured and known of many riders killed by people entering the roadway who misjudge the oncoming bike or simply don't see it. Even though the bike is not the burdened vehicle, the rider pays the price. This goes for people who misjudge oncoming cars as well as we all have seen.

This is a valuable lesson for all people driving antique cars, especially when they don't do it regularly. Unless one has a streetrod, accelleration is much slower. I'm not bashing any older people here but reactions and depth perception (eyesight) wane over time and we have to be mindful of that.

I've driven over 600,000 miles in the last ten years so by no means am I apologizing for one cell phone user or texter in a car. I've seen so many unbelievable things that people do while driving that it is no longer a surprise. The old adage, "Drive Defensively" is still valid and one we must follow.

The funeral for Herb was yesterday (8/18/2010), one week after Ruth. They both suffered from severe multiple internal injuries. Herb was thrown from the car, Ruth was not. He was attempting to cross a 4 lane highway and apparently did not see the oncoming car. The A was hit about the front axle but had little damage to the body.

Pictures of the car as posted by their son are here

Herb and Ruth were long time members of the Wisconsin Region of MARC. The casket was taken by Model A pickup from the church 10 miles to the cemetery. The Region provided an impressive Model A escort.

That is too bad. Although age surely can play a role in judgement calls, this can happen to anyone, considering blind spots and human error. Just strengthens my desire to double check both ways and be sure it is clear before pulling out in my A. This is a good reminder for everyone.

Incidently, it looks like quite a bit of body damage to me. The driver's side is creased and it looks like that crease effected the passenger side as well although it is hard to tell from the pictures.

Prayers to the family. Tom

Steve,
'not bashing' ?? Hmm, with your ifs/buts/ mabe and my favorite, i.e.-cell phone use would be "moot" in a fatal crash! On the left coast it's ILLEGAL to use such while driving. Why would it be illegal to text/phone while driving..mabe you kill people?
It's not just model As and/or motorcycles. It's mixing these machines with pocket rockets, etc on public roads and drivers with hundreds of horsepower..knowing nothing about the go fast vehicle their driving while distracted to death(theirs or others). This past Tuesday, here on Van Nuys Blvd a man sitting at a RED LIGHT, in his 3 window '32 ford coupe, rear ended, at speed, by a woman ..sufficiently distracted to have never even hit her brakes! Yeah, he was an old guy...therefor, he's got to be at fault. I'm hoping that people with predisposed notions based upon suposition...are NOT on the civil trial in this model A matter! May this old couple rest in peace...

When this thread first came out. I remember trying to be funny and stated that I hated to see things happen to our Model A's, and then asked to see pictures. But now, knowing that they both died in this horrific accident I want to send my deepest and sincerest apologies and condolences to the families and friends of these two people. May god take care of them, and all who loved them.

Just heartbreaking. I put seat belts in my cars this summer. This underscores their importance. Don't put this off: Install seat belts!
