Maybe my eyes are trick'n again but those grooves don't appear to go all the way to the back of the bearing.

Back in the earl '50s, my Dad bought a '31 AA that had only 10K original miles. The vehicle spent most of the time parked all those 20 years. Inspection of the crank showed that the mains were OK, but the rods needed to be spruced up. He did all this with the engine in the vehicle. To "polish" the rod journals, he used Crokus cloth wrapped around the journals and spun the crank while holding the cloth tightly to the journals. At only 9 years old, I had the job of pressing the starter switch while my Dad tended to the under vehicle duties. One of the great times I had with my Dad working on cars, and probably the driving force behind why I ow a Model A today.
