Front motor mounts
I recently bought a 1950 F1. The engine appears to be a passenger 8BA (the engine is painted bronze and the belts are wide. When I pulled the engine for a rebuild, I noticed that the right front motor mount had 2 rubber mounts and an extra long bolt and the left one had a single rubber mount. The mounting holes in the frame are 20" center to center and the holes in the water pumps are 21 1/8" center to center. I thought that the passenger and commercial engines had the same water pumps except for the belt width.. Could some one shed some light on this for me please.

Re: Front motor mounts
Any chance one of the pumps is a Merc pump? The foot is higher by about 2". Could account for the width difference as well as the 2 cushion on one side. They were also wide belt like the truck pumps.

Re: Front motor mounts
If the pump on the engine right side looks like this. It is as stated most likely a wide belt '49 Mercury pump.

Re: Front motor mounts
OK, I took pictures and the right side is about 2 " higher than the left side, so I guess I have Mercury water pumps. Is that true of both sides? What water pumps do I need to be correct?

Re: Front motor mounts
Speedway is one source for the correct pair of pumps.

Re: Front motor mounts
So let me get this straight, the left side pump on a truck and a mercury are the same. I only need to get a truck right side and I am in business?

Re: Front motor mounts
The left side pump on a US truck and Mercury are not the same. The Mercury pump is totally wrong for your application. It was something that someone did because it was most likely all that they had. Yes get the truck right side.

Re: Front motor mounts
Sounds like a chewing gum & bailing wire fix to me. I saw a lot of that kind of Rube Goldberg fixes on old farm trucks when I was a kid. Somebody had a bad truck pump but just so happened to have a Merc pump that was still usable. Likely not the first time it ever happened.
Use it up & wear it out. Make it do or do without. |

Re: Front motor mounts
After 67 years of passing from owner to owner, things happen. As near as I can see, the passenger car engine was the only major change. I ordered a pair of truck water pumps from Summit last night. Thanks for setting me straight.
