Re: Model A horn.
Since the diaphragm generates the sound, I would think that is correct. If the diaphragm develops a crack, that also changes the sound.
I’m curious. Did the article say why someone would want to solder a penny to the diaphragm? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Model A horn.
The diaphragm is made of spring steel, any alteration to it will affect the sound.

Re: Model A horn.
I read article on this site a long time ago, and that an elderly guy who restores model A klaxon horns solders a penny on the diaphragm to alter the tone of the sound.

Re: Model A horn.
What is a klaxon horn? A type/style? I thought the klaxon was on the model T with a manual push devise.

Here is an era Klaxon magazine ad from the French Fordisme magazine from 1930, declaring that Klaxon equips the new Fords: ....and here is what one looks like on a French Model A: Brad in Maryland Last edited by Brad in Germany; 08-02-2020 at 08:49 PM. |

Re: Model A horn.
A repo diaphragm gives a different note as they are thicker, Don,t expect much for a penny, try a NZ $2 coin ?? Are you wanting a more tinny noise or a gruffer one ??

Re: Model A horn.
The Model A horn produces a very unique and discernible sound recognized by generations. Why would you want to alter the sound?

Re: Model A horn.
My delivery came with a Klaxon horn mounted under the hood. I grew up with the belief that all model T & A horns were Klaxons until I joined here and noticed virtually NO mention of them and lots of discussion about Spartan horns. I honestly don't recall where the idea that Klaxon horns were the norm came from though.

Re: Model A horn.
I think klaxon is a generic term covering all "aooghaa" horns regardless of manufacture. The term probably originated from horns made by the Klaxon company, in the same way that we refer to "hoovers", regardless of which company made the vacuum cleaner.

Re: Model A horn.
That makes sense. Like "Kleenex" and "Kotex". That is likely where I got the notion that all ahooga horns were "klaxon".
