The bottoms of my doors are horrible.
I try not to look too closely and just drive it.

Cab corners ,cowl panels, and the floor pans are the common rust area. If it has a heater(or had a heater) pay close attention to the passenger side floor pan.

Add to those, around the windshield, fender extensions, fenders where the running board attaches, and the running boards themselves. All good fun.

Yeah, I know what you mean, "the voice of reason".... hahaha

Rust out spots really depends on the area you buy your truck from. Mid-west and south can be really bad, north west US varies, southwest US is usually solid....

Most I've seen rust out where the lower valance meets the front fender extensions - below the headlight. The metal bed floor can rot depending on how the truck was cared for. Plus what the others have mentioned.

As others have mentioned, there are a couple of standard rust areas for the F1s. The fenders, in particular, are prone to rust where Ford designed in stiffeners that ensured a reliable rust breeding ground. Portions of the joint between the upper and lower front fenders, as well as any complicated bend area of the lowers. Running boards also had stiffeners - same story. The running board to fender joints, and often the rear fender to bed joint, are common trouble areas.

For the 53-56 trucks, the cab roof by the rain channel, the front of the hood, and the side cowls are watch areas.

Went and took a good look at the 49 over the weekend. Gonna bring it home next weekend. Couldn't find any rust except for the drivers side floor boards. Should be an easy fix. The truck needs a lot of mechanical repair, no brakes at all, the wiring harness is a DIY setup that's in good shape but I'll want to put it back stock, has been converted to 12 volts however. The engine appeared to have a considerable amount of blow-by, my first flatty V8, I'll have lots of questions.

More like twins Ken! Is that red a factory color? Any fancy coolness under the hood? First thing I'll need to address is the brakes, that shouldn't be too big of a deal. The choke is very sticky, hard to push back in, and it acts as though the accelerator pump isn't working. After having it running for a while it appears an accumulation of oil gathered above the RHS head and started to smoke. Leaking from the intake manifold? Maybe?

Looks like a solid truck. If you don't already have one, a 49-52 Shop Manual is a good investment. They are available on Amazon/eBay for about $30, typically.

Does this mean you and I are going to be forming the North Cascade Chapter of the Early Ford V8 Club? Benny

Hey Art that is one nice looking truck, post some more pictures when you get it home. After you fix the safety issues, I would just drive it to see how the motor shakes out.

Benny, you can not join or form any more clubs until you have a drive-able Model A.

I think the pictures make it look a little nicer than it really is, but it's still pretty good. Way nicer than I expected to end up with. I think I'm better off having to fix mechanical things rather than patch rust outs. The engine didn't make any nasty sounds. I wonder if the oil leak could be back at the fuel pump? If the V8 is anything like the Model A, it can be pretty tired and still run pretty good. The accelerator pump probably has a check valve? Maybe it's just gunked up.

Nothing like moving an old pickup with no brakes, in the pouring down rain...

Spent some time getting the truck running a little better. Pretty pleased with the progress so far. The gas is old, which isn't helping but at least it is starting well. The choke cable was all bent up and sticky, straighten and lubed it up and is working pretty good now. The throttle return spring was anchored to the rubber hose running to vacuum line on the distributor! Where is the throttle return spring supposed to go? Anyway, I put together a bit of a walk-a-round video. I should have a new master cylinder tomorrow... might get a drive around the block!
