Re: Flathead repair
That I have not check but I have never seen oil in the radiator or water in the oil. Funny thing is if I turn the car off for 5 minutes and start it up it will run fine again but a couple of minutes later it will start acting up again. It also is not getting hot when it does this. The temp is right around 185. What ever the issue is seems to be something not related to heat because it is up to operating temp and runs fine. Seems to be something is giving out with time.

Re: Flathead repair
Could be the resistor wire is broken but making contact, heats up and gets intermittent. Try hotwiring the car to the coil and see if it continues to run with no missing.

Re: Flathead repair
I did hear a story of a guy building an engine. Got everything tuned up just right and it would cut out in a minute or so. Tore everything down 3 or 4 times to find an issue and nothing appeared. Finally, he popped off the gas cap and he was greeted by a whoosh of air into the tank and realized the cap wasn't vented right and made a vacuum in the tank pulling fuel back.

Re: Flathead repair
One more possibility is that the heat riser in the inlet manifold has blown; as it heats up, more and more exhaust dilutes the incoming charge. I have experienced this exact problem, took me months to diagnose; i was convinced it was electrical.

Re: Flathead repair
Did it run fine when you had your foot of the gas but when you gave it gas the it would start to act up. Also does it make a sound like air going through baffles. It almost sounds like the sound that is made when you blow a horn but all you get is air thought the horn.

Re: Flathead repair
It could be something in the gas tank moving around
and blocking the fuel pickup tube, then releasing when the engine is turned off. |

Re: Flathead repair
Engine gets hot, it starts to misfire....
Coil and condenser. New doesn't always mean good usually. Get a vacuum gauge on it too... . |
