Re: Henry's Boat
I wonder why he named the boat Evangeline.

Re: Henry's Boat
Probably because his mistress was named Evangeline Dahlinger. He didn't do a very good job of keeping it under wraps.

Sounds like a real great man............ Combine that with the "Ford service department" and I'd rather just forget he had anything to do with the "A". The more I learn about him the less I like him. What kind of engines are those in the Miss America boats? Converted airplane engines? |

Re: Henry's Boat
People are complicated and no one is perfect. Henry was a pretty good businessman. How much he actually had to do with the Model A is subject to debate. The T was his baby. The A was a great second act. He was the visionary. As a role model, not so much.

Re: Henry's Boat
Henry Ford was, like many geniuses, an extremely complex man. He was in stong contention to run as the Republican candidate for President of the United States. Henry Ford was a Pacifist and spent millions on trying to prevent WW1.
Later on, he also was, like America's national hero - Charles Lindberg, a supporter of the Nazi movement and received one of the Nazi's highest medals. During WW11, he was also one the the biggest industralists to help destroy the Nazis. So, as in many things, there are often times where events and actions leave the observer perplexed with 'mixed signals'. Henry Ford was one such example. However, when all the dust has settled, his still remains as one of America's great men. Last edited by DougVieyra; 09-17-2015 at 03:48 PM. |

Re: Henry's Boat
Engines. Depending on the year and boat number determines what engine[s] the boat would have. Early Miss America's had Curtiss, Packard, or Liberty engines. Later boats had multiple engines including Miller's.
It appears the race boats in the enclosed picture have Liberty's. |

Re: Henry's Boat
I am truly amazed....
https://youtu.be/axIJ2tsye_I Someone actually made better (stronger?) engines than the Duesy straight 8 in the 1920s-1930s. I had no idea. |

Re: Henry's Boat
Two silly questions.
Why do the Liberty engines not have valve covers!? This is a 1930s engine no? What lubricates the valve stems? Second, why do most if not all boat engines exhaust the cooling water out with the engine exhaust? |

Re: Henry's Boat
The boats were highly flammable also hundreds of gallons of gasolene were on board . The exhaust system had to be routed through the hull to the stern where it would not invade the passenger space . To cool the exhaust gasses water was injected into the exhaust to cool it . Also cut the need for very extensive insulation and also acted as a sound deadener .

Re: Henry's Boat
Neat post, very attractive boat. Beautiful woodwork.
I believe Henry Ford was overall, a great contributor to America and an overall great man, BUT, however, WHY in the world he 1.)got involved in politics (Ryan would have banned him) 2.) developed that dumb Dearborn Independent newspaper attacking Jews and 3.) let himself be influenced by Harry Bennett is all totally beyond me. If he had kept to the business of making automobiles everyone would have benefited. Look at the times he took Ford to the brink of destruction only to have Edsel Ford and later Henry Ford II pull it out of the depths and keep it going. Charlie Sorensen, Bob Gregorie, Peter Martin, and other great automotive talents contributed immensely too, to Ford. I always understood it to be, that the Model A was Edsel's baby and it was the right car at the right time. I think Henry tolerated the A until they could roll out the Flathead V-8. That plus since he didn't endorse the Model A like Edsel did, he would have been against it in his heart as narcisstic as he was. He loved to belittle Edsel to 'make him (Edsel)tough' and all it did was kill the man at an early age due to stomach cancer from excessive worry. Edsel was loved by everyone he was a first rate guy. I believe I read once where a Jewish doctor was the one responsible for Clara's hysterectomy, and Henry resented the fact they could not have any more children and all the side effects of such an operation? May be the reason he was so anti-Jewish?? I could be all wet correct me if I'm wrong. |

Re: Henry's Boat
This boat was finished in 1924. 20,478 Liberty L-12 motors were produced in 1918 and 1919.
