Changing color of frame
I bought a restored 1 1/2T chassis ,complete except for the engine.
The color is silver gray and I want to paint it black. It appears that the metal was blasted as the pitting is not too deep and very clean. I tried rubbing a remote area of the paint with laquer thinner, brake fluid and carb cleaner. It was untouched. Any suggestions how to overcoat this paint ??? |

Re: Changing color of frame
Sounds like your frame may have been powder coated by the resistance you are finding trying to remove the finish. If you determine this, I have scuffed the surface with a DA with 120 grit and repainted it with enamel which held up very well.

Re: Changing color of frame
To clarify: all chassis and running gear parts have been painted individually,
before assembly. |

Re: Changing color of frame
Just paint it as Krylon32 recommends if you wan't it a different color. You nor the factory needs or did paint things separately.

Re: Changing color of frame
Use a high quality etching primer and then then paint it.
Call Eastwood and see what they sell. |

Re: Changing color of frame
Could the coating be Imron? I heard that stuff is really hard.

Re: Changing color of frame
Or could be PoR 15, maybe KBS Rust Seal. I have used the Rust Seal on sandblasted transmission parts. Once cured, it is hard. Sand paper just scuffs it enough for their top coat.

Re: Changing color of frame
Or...re-sandblast the frame; no need to remove the coating that's on there, but sandblasting will provide a good 'tooth' for your desired paint system to adhere to.

Re: Changing color of frame
Here is an approach. First determine what you would like to pain it with. Take a small part off the chassis and scuff it with sandpaper and paint it. If it looks ok and appears to have stuck you should be ok. I have doubts about a truck frame that big being powder coated but I could be wrong.

That is a sound idea.
