Default My Pet Peeve - Landau Iron Rant

There currently are six Sport Coupes on eBay. Five have the landau irons incorrectly installed. Looking at others on Google, that seems to be the rule rather than the exception. WTF??!! There are several factory pix showing the correct installation. It ain't rocket surgery!

Landau Irons wrong way, easy fix.

Wrong top shape, materials, and incorrect rear window.

All of the above make me wonder why time and money is being spent. Doesn’t have to be a show car, but put it together correctly.

Even at National Conventions you see them.
Also you Cabby special interest guys, check out page 13 of the latest Cabrioletter.

Exactly. Yeah, it's an easy fix but why not do it correctly the first time?

Yup, Free Style landau irons.....on such a great looking Cabriolet too :

....and then they fold down kinda funny droopy looking, messing with the compact folded roof look:

Twist them, then rotate them 180 degrees and voila.

....else it is a beautiful 68B.

THANK YOU for saying it. I love my sport coupe. (Everyone knows the sport coupe is the most beautiful of all Model A's.) But seeing the landau irons on the wrong side is like fingernails on a chalkboard, if you can remember chalk boards. I've attended five national meets, and at each, I've seen very nice, very well-restored sport coupes with the irons on the wrong side. How can you not notice? But it's a delicate thing to tell an owner something is wrong with his or her car.

This is my 68B. I just got the car in Oct 2017. It had been in a widows basement over 7 years. I thought the top folded funny. I have several books and the restorations guidelines. Please tell me how to correct the wrong and we will both be happy.

Changed the irons. Top closes easier. Thanks for the rant. If you see anything I can do to improve the car please post.

You've got them on the correct sides now. The curves are correct. If you now switch them end for end, the knob at the center will come out on top of the iron, not the bottom. At least that's right for the sport coupe. I'm not so sure about the folding irons on the cabby. Will they still fold correctly if you have the knob on top?

I have a 1929 sport coupe. I don't think my top folds down. Are some different than others?

Mebbe - like I said, it's a pet peeve. If it's intentional, not my preference but also not my car so fair 'nuff. If it's ignorance (meaning lack of information, not insult), not so much. Either way, correct is correct and not is not!

No, Sport Coupe tops do not fold - landau irons are just cosmetic.

That is a sweet cabbie - my favorite color scheme and even sweeter now that you have the bars correct. Always wanted one - maybe some day...

Hi TerryO,

Yup, it looks kinda the same, but it is a different car. The green one in the photo that I posted is (was) my Dad's car (and mine before that) before he sold it several years ago.....and, now of course, he would like to buy it back again (He knows where it is in storage) Love the green colors......

Jwilli - I think your Cabbi looks great now with the landau irons in the original configuration. ...and most admirable that you are able to take everyones' comments as constructive.... Luckily we live in a free country where everyone is entitled to their own personal feelings about their cars......so whatever floats your boat, is what is right for you.

....and as for me, I too prefer my landau irons in the factory original configuration.

Jwilli,

Thank you for not taking offense at my comments. Now I can sleep better knowing at least one more set of landau irons is in the correct position (if I can get this darned pet peeve to move over and stop hogging the covers.)

Bill, you will find some humor in this reply. Looked at the pictures taken the day I brought the car home. Note that the irons on the driver's side are correct. On the passenger side wrong. If the original pictures were of the driver's side would there have been a peeve? If both sides were shown would we have had half a peeve?

Peeves are the perfect pets. You don't have to feed them, walk them or clean up after them. They don't bite, tear up the furniture or dig up the yard. I "SLEEP" with my wife - dunno know what you and the dog do.

Half a PEEVE is what you do in your SKIVIES, then you make it to the pot, for the other HALF.

I just noticed in the most recent edition of the Model A News that there are three Sport Coupes and two of them have the irons the wrong way. Pretty unreal.
