Re: What year F1 steering box for model A?
That is like asking, "how far is up?"
We need more info. 1-What is the car used for? Street only, race only, combination street and race? 2-What is your definition of "best"? Best cost, best driving, best looking? 3-Power or non power? 4- Completely stock looking or modified looking? 5-Prefered color? |

Re: What year F1 steering box for model A?
Some of this info comes from secrets magazine July 2004, F100 boxes 53 to 56, they are the same length as stock A. I've read that the f100,f250 and f350 all the same length. 1957 to 60 are 1'' shorter.
I was lucky to find a 56 because it was the first year the turn signals were built into the column. You'll have to trim down the flange on the box to fit inside the frame rail, you can use 1 of the existing bolt holes and drill 2 more. I used the f100 pitman arm because it's much better, It must be modified slightly to work, I removed the 5/8" bolt and replaced it with a 7/16" grade 8 bolt, I took a piece of 5/8" round stock about 2" long and drilled a 7/16" hole through it and offset to the outside edge then tack welded in place, then cut 1/8" out of it at the gap for compression, then mill or grind the top off so it will not hit the bottom of fender. For the lites I just used a push pull replacement switch, and a starter button for the horn. |

On mine, you can't tell it from a model A inside the cab, and lights & horn work as original.

Re: What year F1 steering box for model A?
Is there anyone that rebuilds the ‘31 steering box ?
Id buy (another box) from Gross, but the price for f100 is now over $900. With transport/tax ! Paid about $250 from old man Mel Gross many yrs ago. |

Call Bill Hansen in Ramona 760-789-8296. He does great quality work and is very good to deal with.
As for our prices, $250.00 was probably 20 or more years ago. We been doing them for almost 30 years now. F100 steering box cores alone today are close to the $250.00 if you can find them. Then you have to add a new steering column shaft, new worm gear, new sector roller, new bearings and races, teardown, cleaning, machining and assembling. It all adds up real quickly! |
