Re: mercury flywheel
I don't know of any difference between a 49-53 Ford flywheel and a 49-53 Mercury flywheel (as far as fitment goes). As long as you have the correct clutch plate and disc, should not be an issue.

Re: mercury flywheel
Bolt holes for the clutch and pressure plate may not be the same for Ford and Mercury.

Re: mercury flywheel
you can not use a pre 8ba style, 48 and back, just the newer 49 and up, and as stated above make sure you know what pressure plate you want to use will fit

Re: mercury flywheel
The Mercury uses a Borg and Beck pressure plate which has a different bolt pattern than the 8BA,other than that it fits just fine.

Re: mercury flywheel
flatjack9 is correct. I now recall that when I installed a 10 inch 50 Mercury clutch and pressure plate on my 8BA, I had to use the 50 Merc flywheel because of the bolt pattern.
Of course you could get your 8BA flywheel redrilled. |

Re: mercury flywheel
You can use any 8BA family flywheel but the different clutches have different bolt patterns. What transmission do you want to use? That may make your clutch options change to suit. Different transmissions have different input spline types for to fit the clutch disk.
Any 8BA family flywheel can be redrilled to fit about any clutch. |

Re: mercury flywheel
My 53 merc has a 9.5 " P/P and disk for a 39 trans. spline. I believe the fly wheel is a 8BA that is drilled for the P/P diameter it has or you can have it drilled for what you need. The early flathead fly wheels will not work. JM2cts.

Re: mercury flywheel
Using a 9-inch Long type clutch disc with a 9.5-inch Long type pressure plate would rob a person of much needed friction surface.
If a person is going to use an old Ford or Mercury transmission with the 1 3/8" 10-spline, either the 10-inch 49 thru early 51 Mercury Borg & Beck clutch could be used or the flywheel can be drilled for a 10-inch Long type Ford clutch. These were used in pickups, station wagons, and police cars in the 8BA era. If a later 8BA era Ford transmission with the 1"-10-spline input is used then a stock 8BA Ford 9.5" clutch and flywheel will work or the 1951 & later Mercury Borg & Beck 10" clutch & flywheel would work as well |
