Default markings on rear axle housing

Was stripping the paint and wire brushing the rear axle housings this afternoon, and found the number F68 stamped on the outside of both differential housings, by the mating surfaces. The numbers are 3/8" high. And then on the driver's side housing, stamped on the boss that would have been machined for the drain plug (had it been used on the passenger side) the number 168 is stamped, the numbers being 3/16" high. Anyone know what the significance of these numbers are?
