1957 Ford Wiper Transmission Cable routing
Hello,
I am re installing a 1957 Ford wiper cable transmission, I have the manual and the picture in it shows the cable routing left and right but I cant for the life of me rout it as the book shows as the cable retainers dont seem to work the way it is shown? Any experts out there with photos of how? John

Why oh why are you messing with that old obsolete stuff? It didn't work all that well when it was new, and now it's over fifty years old! Just get a new electric set-up, install it, and forget the hassle. Life is too short to waste on fixing this old obsolete stuff.

Re: 1957 Ford Wiper Transmission Cable routing
Unfortunately, a new electric drive motor will not cure the problems of the cable drive transmission that drives the two wiper blade shafts. The electric drive motor is a very nice upgrade to the old vacuum drive, but you still have to deal with the cable drive system behind the cowl.
The 1957 Shop Manual has the cable connections shown incorrectly (Page 8-27). Using the image in the shop manual showing the center cable motor drive pulley, the two cables from the left side wiper should be wrapped around the center grooves and the two cables from the right side should be wrapped around the two outer grooves in the center drive pulley. Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of this when I reassembled mine, but they work with the cables routed in this manner. As I recall, this was a very tedious task and resulted in skinned knuckles and new cuss words, but it can be done. Good Luck, Dave |

I may have some incorrect information in my above explanation. I did this installation over a year ago and the exact assembly sequence does escape me, but I found a post on another site that has photos and step by step instructions: http://57fordsforever.com/smf/index.php?topic=8407.0 Once again, good luck with your assembly. I now see that. Humph, very classy indeed. Left over chev engineering. How about using a complete 58 Ford setup? It seems to mount the same way.

Oh I pitty you. I had to do that when I got my car. No real source of info. I must have had mine in and out 10 times. My back was sore for a week. Why the man that put my car together ever tore that thing out is beyond my imagination.

Re: 1957 Ford Wiper Transmission Cable routing
I took off all the access panels, lubed it all and it works just fine with an aftermarket electric motor. Had a 57 Chev electric motor on it but that died. No problems with the linkage itself, but then I avoided ever taking it apart. Car is a convertible so not much wet weather use anyway...

Re: 1957 Ford Wiper Transmission Cable routing
I think I have turned mine on 1 time since I put the electric unit on it. And that was just for a couple of minutes. Mine is a retractable, so I'm like you...top down car because I enjoy it that way. The top works just fine...
