Visual Diagnosis, Maybe....
If I post pictures of the guts of my engine, what can you tell me about it? In relation to issues, problems etc. Story behind it is that I pulled the pan not knowing last time it has been pulled. Thanks in advance.

If we're going to diagnose a patient, it's helpful to know what symptoms brought the patient to the office in the first place. How's it running?

The one thing I see is I would not be too happy with the guy who cut groves across the beams of the rods to indicate where they go. All this does is to cause a big stress riser but there is not much you can do about that now.

Not a whole lot one can tell from pictures of an assembled lower end.
I can see that some of the pistons have shims showing but they don't look like factory ones to me. Seems fairly clean. At least a few of the timing gear teeth are good. The remaining 90% no clue. One would need to open up the bearings for a look see to really start to know the condition. Rock/jiggle the crank back and forth to see if you can see excess movement of the rod bearings.

It looks just like the lower end of a Model A engine. If you had no problems before, just put the pan on, add oil, and drive it. Don’t overthink it. It will eventually let you know if there’s a problem.

Actually, my observations are there are several things that can be noted. While the engine is not as clean as I would want to see, it is not horrible however from my experiences it does appear this engine does have some blow-by.
The camshaft appears to have quite a bit of wear, -and if this engine was rebuilt in the past, it would appear the camshaft was not reground. (On a side-note, this is an earlier engine by the looking at the 5-main camshaft) In picture #1, it appears that #2 connecting rod does not have any shims whereas #1 & #3 do, albeit they aren't very thick. The timing gear appears to be a laminated type that has dried, and the crankshaft gear appears to have rust forming which will cause premature wear on the cam gear. My overall take is, check clearances and adjust to spec if possible. Replace the cam gear and reassemble. |

I would think go ahead and plastigage and adjust bearing clearance while you are in there?
