Default Testing a Starter Field Coil

Tom Wesenberg posted a tip once that to test the Field Coil in a Generator, you connected the leads from a battery charger to the wires of the coil, and if it read a 4 amp or less draw, the Field Coil was good. Does anyone know if this same test can be used to test the Field Coil in a Starter Motor? Tom, are you out there

Thanks

The starter field coil has very heavy windings, so it will probably show 0 ohms on most meters. Take an ohm reading from the field wire to the case. It should show no connection (infinity ohms). Chances are it's good if it shows infinity

The Delco starter/generator on my Cub Cadet had worn insulation on the field windings, and once in a while it would short to the case. I removed the windings and wraped them with friction tape about 7 years ago, and it's still working fine.
