46 rear end,
A friend is building an A roadster full fendered, flathead, 39 stick trans. he's looking for a 39-40 rear end, found a 46 merc rear, I believe the merc rear is wider, ( is that right? ) will it fit with tires between the rear fenders? Also seems I read some place the merc drive shaft is hooked to the pinon differant. Can any one help on the question? I pic of that Merc drive shaft would be nice. Thanks. Walt

Re: 46 rear end,
46 merc is like a ford. Driveshaft is the same. The rear will fit but the tires will be out at the edge of the fenders. It will look better with a 35 to 41 rear. The 42 to 48 rear works better under a heavy channeled car with no fenders.
The odd ball driveshaft merc rear it think is just the 39 40 merc. |

Re: 46 rear end,
Walt, I think I have one for a '40 from my parts car (but who knows what was changed in 76 years), the backing plates aren't on it right now. Measured from the axle backing plate bolt flange to flange it measures in at 53 and a 1/4 inches, measured going over the center section which makes the measurement a little longer .
I do have '40 backing plates and drums front and rear, and the rear hubs have been drilled for 4 3/4 (chevy :-\ ), but not the rear drums. |

Re: 46 rear end,
A '46 is too wide for an A with fenders; less headache to get a '40 or earlier rear.
Besides the correct width; the earlier rear permits you to use the new bolt-on hangers (or some trimmed off old A axle bells) for the spring. Last edited by rich b; 07-10-2016 at 10:56 PM. |
