Walt, unfortunately, the cast iron heads do vary allot, and it's best to measure them. Are both heads the same? Does sound big, should be around 70.

How do you determine CC size? Ken

Fluid is the easiest way and a piece of plexiglass over the chamber

RotorWrench is right. I have the plexiglass, plate with a funnel on the top, with a little bleed hole in the plate, and a chamber that holes 100cc, smear some grease around the the edge of the head, lay the plexiglasson on the head, put a spark plug in the chamber, pour mineral spirit in, fill the head untill the juice comes to the bleed hole, read the juice in the tube. WD,
On 2 builds I matched the chambers to the exact location of the bores/piston crowns. By milling each head enough so the pistons lifted the head slightly then
carefully die grinding piston contact marks in the chambers after the motor was turned over a few times, 8 hours per head, no kiddin'. These were EAB heads.......each chamber was 72 cc's plus or minus couple cc's. With a crushed BEST 'graphtite' head
gasket I ended up with .040 between the chamber and the piston.
Too much info ??

What this accomplishes is: More turbulence in the combustion chamber. Modern engines usually have only .030/.035 in their chambers. The flathead has a very large chamber compared to say a SBC and need all the help it can get. What this accomplishes id a lower Octane requirement fuel, better throttle response and improved fuel mileage. However to take advantage of this modification, one should also provide the proper Ignition curve and AF ratio. It's possible to get over 20MPG in a 276 with L-100 cam. Think of what you could get form a stocker.

You've got that right Ron, My 276 in my 40 has 160# compression, I used to think I had to use the super pump gas, and always had a pinging problem with a stock crab set up. Cain't tell you what I have for a cam, I got it from a stock driver 40 years ago, it's wicked, jurky when you slow down in to town, have to keep the rpm up to at least 1800, of course I've got alot of gears T5 trans and 9in. with 350 gears, BUT, I finally figured how to set the crab, 17* total, kept tightening the vacume brake a little at a time untill it stopped pinging, running the cheap 87 Octane, I get 18mpg on secondary roads, 20mpg on the turnpike. That 276 will spin to 5000 so guick it will scare yea. BTW, running 4 97s straight linkage, carbs set up by Max dr man. Walt

Did you ever notive that all of the engines that "run like stink" have an unknown cam that came from nowhere.
