Help! Identify this engine
Hey guys, I just picked up this chassis with this stamped on the block. Can you help me identify the year, possibly what it was in? Thanks in advance, Shaun

Re: Help! Identify this engine
The numbers are not original factory stamps. It looks to me that the original numbers on the pad have been ground off and new smaller numbers stamped on. The numbers correspond with an engine that would have been made in September of 1930.
My opinion, Chris W. |

Yeah, I noticed they looked a little off. So that serial # is coming up as a 1930 model A? Looking to rebuild the engine I’d be looking up parts for 1930 “a” engine, yeah (assuming the serial # is correct)?

Re: Help! Identify this engine
I agree that the numbers are not original. Smaller than the original and the star not at the end. It may be that the engine was installed in a late 1930 car that had that serial number. Look at the serial number on the chassis (port side near firewall) to see if the chassis matches the engine number.
Regarding parts for the engine, except for very early engines, they pretty much used the same parts. There are subtle differences in the block casting over the years that I cannot remember.

Re: Help! Identify this engine
Back in the day there was a booming business in rebuilt Model A engines. Sears, Montgomery Ward, JC Whitney and other mail order places sold rebuilt Model A engines, as did Ford dealers and local parts stores. So a large percentage of A's lost their original engine decades ago!

Production numbers according to Les Andrews: 3883889-4005973 puts this engine produced roughly the middle of September 1930 Would not care to comment on the stamping authenticity..... |

Re: Help! Identify this engine
The engine that number originally appeared on was stamped September 9th 1930.
Engine parts are interchangeable between the years (with very few exceptions) so don't worry too much about that.
