Default Spring crossmember pad?

What are you guys using for a "pad" between the top of the springs and crossmember? I remember someone on here said they made them out of some material.

Ford did not install pads on the model A.

The spring seats right on the cross member. No material.
Be sure the top leaf has the beveled edges so it seats all the way in the crossmember.

I use a chunk of thin oil soaked leather with a small hole cut for the center bolt....

So, I know why they were used on a Model-T but what is gained using them on a Model-A? When you compare the shape of the crossmember in the area the top spring touches and look at the way the spring is anchored, it can't move enough to squeak if it is correctly installed.

When I reassembled my springs I went by Les Andrews book that states "Cut an 8inch strip of body welt to be placed between the the spring and front cross member". And so I did!
