The phillips spark advance (nurex) works on the same principal, and is effective.I prefer the function in the distributor,it makes any maintenance required easier.

How so. The Nu-Rex operates on a Gyro. There is no "maintenance" unless it breaks, which i doubt will happen. It is bathed in oil being splashed around the valve chamber so no need to lube.

How so? You dont have to tear the valve cover off and remove the distributor if you have a problem..both systems work on centrifugal force, both work well, good luck with your phillips.

And here I thought part of the fun of owning these old monsters was getting used to how to operate them.

The mechanical advances do not respond to load unless they also have a vacuum diaphragm to retard timing when the vacuum drops relative to load.

You are correct. That is why I set my initial timing retarded so I can manually retard the timing when going up a steep grade. With the Nu-Rex/Phillips you retain your timing lever.

It is such a simple thing to adjust the spark as needed. A little know-how and some common sense is all that's needed. I'd say if someone can't figure it out, they should stick with a Toyota.
