Default single barrel hollys

I'm looking for help with the single barrel Holly on my 57 Wagon. Yep, its a 223 six. The car came with two carbs, one on the car and a spare that I now believe may be the original carb. The one on the car has a very small venturi and no power valve. The main jet is a 40. Performance and drivability is pretty poor with this carb. The other carb has a much larger venturi, a power valve and a 66 main jet. It also has the glass fuel bowl while the smaller carb does not. I want to rebuild one of these carbs or if neither is right get another to rebuild. Can anyone help me figure out the right carb and which jet to use? Thanks.

The small carb sounds like one for a 144/170 I-6. The larger with glass bowl fits the description of a Model 1904 for 215/223. It would be a List 1415-A, which should be on the carb. Ford number is EBP9510. Check the center to center dimension of the base holes for match to intake. Also look for throttle linkage compatibility. But the 1904 is the model you want. As for jet size, dont know. 66 seems too big. Try 58, if too rich then 53, and step down until plugs look good.

If you wait a couple days, I have a 1904 in the shop I've been meaning to get to, and can see what it has for a jet.

Glass bowl started in 52 was phased out by 53-54 and went to a metal bowl, same carb but too many people were breaking the bowls LOL. 1904 is the correct one. They were made in AT and SS models and were very slightly diff. ken ct.

OK here is the report. My carb is an EBP9510, List 800. The id was stamped on the flat spot beside the fuel inlet. The later list number above must be for one of the metal fuel bowls like mentioned by ken CT. The jet is 66! A fairly good confirmation there. It looks like the model 1904 was also made for Chevy and Rambler, but they wouldnt have the Ford number, and would have different List #s.

It looks like a cool little unit. I read somewhere that there was a lot of innovative engineering that went into the 1904s. Good Luck.

The carb with the glass bowl is a Holley 1904 and it would be the correct carb for a 223 I-block 6 cyl.
If you do rebuild this carb, do NOT use the fuel inlet fitting and needle provided in the rebuild kit. If you DO use the rebuild parts, you will need to add a fuel pressure regulator ahead of the carb. And you will replace the fuel pressure regulator every 12 months because they will fail within that time frame.

The link below will take you to FORDSIX. A LOT of guys mess around with the Ford 215 and 223 I-block 6 cyls. Go to the board index and find VINTAGE Ford sixes. My tag in there is Daves55Courier

One source for rebuild kit is ebay member graygracey . I ordered a kit today for $30 and $6 shipping. He sells many carb kits. You may need to send him a message via ebay. He said the kits for the Chevy carbs were the same as for the Fords (215/223).

46yblock, I have the Holley Spec sheet for a Holley LIST 800 (54-55 Ford 223 w/ std. and auto trans) It says the main jet size is 66, so can't see any reason to change it. Hope this helps out.

Thanks, Scicala, 66 it is. Just like 46Yblock said he found. I noticed though, that the jet in my 1904 has been mistreated. It looks like it was drilled out. the hole is bell shaped and off center. at any rate it is toast. Are these available new? I checked a site that carries just about any hole size for Holleys and they seem to fit just about all the Holleys, but not sure that they fit the old 1904. The thread size quoted was 1/4-32. Anyone know if the newer jets are the same as the old? It's time to get all those carb guts off my bench and back on the car.

Yes the jets are readily available, likely at your local auto parts store. Thread sizes havent changed. They have to be bought in pairs, so may as well replace both originals.

1/4x32 is correct thread size for holley jets. Their a tapered seat NO gasket is used. ken ct. I may have some .066 if you cant find any.

I agree that the glass bowl carb is the one to use. I have an old Holley manual and specs book. It lists the 1952 thru 1956 215 and 223 6 cyl.glass bowl holley's as having a #66 main jet. It lists two different glass bowl carbs for the 1957 223. One is #68 and one is #69 main jet. It sounds like you may have a carb earlier than 1957, which is good too. Just stick with the main jet that is in it now, and check the plugs and performance.
You may be able to see the part number of you're carb stamped on a small flat surface next to the fuel inlet fitting.

1956 223 six here. The glass bowl is the appropriate one. I replaced mine with a metal bowl 1952henry generously offered me, because mine was cracked.
I second Daves55Sedan opinion on the needle. The one that came with my carb complete kit didnt seal and flooded the carb. Go figure that out..

I can send you the carb's manual via e-mail. Cant upload it here as its too heavy. If you want it tell pm your e-mail or something.

Keep it up.

KR if you need replacement parts not included with the rebuild kit give me a shout, I've lots of experience with those carbs and have spare parts.
Here's some I did for a jeep on an intake I made.
