Default What people will throw away

I run a landfill for the city I live in. A guy came in this morning with a engine and trans from a model a. The engine turns by hand and the trans shifts fine and the clutch on it moves everything up and down. The engine is pretty much complete. I will try to post pics tonight.

Surprisingly enough, not everyone in the world is interested in Model A's! I don't understand it either, but my wife is one of those........

In our small county (no Traffic lights) we have a scrap metal dumpster, the opperators keep a long pole with a hook handy....ive picked Model A wheels,a martin house, steel for projects out of there....ive seen a Flathead,T gas tank and vw parts in there also.

Wick, thats special. On the left coast in our small town you will get a fine for curb leavings. Guess the latest residents have a code of conduct that comes with the mortgage. Bob

Back in the early 60's when you could still go scrounge through the city dumps, I used to find good radios, record players, electric motors, and bicycles. Now they closed most of the open dumps and the ones still open won't allow anything to be taken out. My neighbor saw a mint Raleigh bicycle the other day, but couldn't take it.

We're not supposed to remove anything from our dump either, but as long as nobody climbs on the piles,or wades through it to chance getting cut we are ignored. As long as their back is turned they can say they never saw anything. We used to be allowed to take waste oil from the town tank to use in our waste oil furnaces. All of us with garages would run down, and pump a barrel or two to burn. That was saving the town many thousands in getting it hauled away. That got stopped. Now they call the approved hauler, pay a bunch of money, fill out a sheaf of papers, and he pumps it out. Then he hauls it across town to the same garages as before, pumps it in our tanks, collects $2,per gallon from us,fills out another sheaf of papers, and goes to do it elsewhere. So a bunch of trees get killed for the paperwork,a bunch of diesel gets burned, all for the same end result. It seems like the paperwork readers need jobs.I get A iron from the local scrappers. If they think they have A parts they bring them to the garage. They used to drop engine/transmission assembly's here for $15-$20.With frag/cast at over $300.per ton right now I don't think I will be buying too much.

This is America! We'll throw anything away! I was at my county landfill in Va. and a guy came in with a trailer with a lot ogf old lumber on it, plus there was an old looking Go-cart. I asked if he was discarding that too, When he said yes I asked him to throw it my way and he did. About $10 and an hours work and it ran fine. Good enough for the grandsons to enjoy.

I have always enjoyed looking through junk and reclaiming whatever I could. In my mind a person that will do that is showing a special character trait. All my friends are great people and almost all of them love junk. When I was dating my wife 38 years ago, We were sitting quietly in her house one night when I said, "I would rather be over here with you than in the junkyard".

We have a "Free Table" at out tranfer station were you can leave things for a second chance. I'll take any metal that is there prep it and run it up the road to the scrap yard. One mans trash is my gas money. Bob
